Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher is a terrier-like dog with wiry hair and a shaggy appearance. The breed originated in Germany and its name means “monkey-like terrier”.  The breed in France is described as the “Diablotin Moustachu”, which means moustached little devil.  Affenpinschers have an almost human or apish looking face.  Because of this, you might think they look more like Wookies or Ewoks if you’re a Star Wars fan.

These sturdy, compact but not delicate dogs, are intelligent, loyal, fearless (without regard to their size), affectionate, and comical.  But they also have the capacity to be willful or domineering. Because of their small size, 7-10 pounds, they are a good choice for apartment living.  The Affenpinscher is an intelligent, charming, and good-natured dog that makes an active addition to the family.  Affenpinschers require moderate exercise chasing toys and taking brisk walks.  These activities are necessary for both exercising and socializing of the dog with people and other dogs.

Did you know that if you own pets from the rodent family such as hamsters, ferrets, gerbils, you will not want to acquire an Affenpinscher for your household? The affenpinscher’s heritage is as a “ratter” like the Yorkshire Terrier’s was.  Although the Affenpinscher is not a terrier, it was bred to work like one, and has a history of exterminating rats and pests in the German stables in the 1600s.  With time, these dogs were moved into people’s homes where they worked to rid the kitchen of mice and served as bed-warming companions.

The Affenpinscher’s wiry coat requires regular grooming.  Brushing and combing twice a week and a trim twice a year for their medium length wiry coat (considered hypoallergenic) is sufficient.  Nail trimming and teeth brushing should be routinely performed.

In 1936 the American Kennel Club accepted the Affenpinscher into their ranks in the Toy Group.  These dogs possess immense charm which has made them a significant force in the show ring, having also succeeded in agility, obedience, and therapy.
